Arunachala is not merely a hill — it is considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva himself in the form of a Jyotirlinga (pillar of fire). According to the Shiva Purana, when Brahma and Vishnu argued about who was supreme, Shiva appeared as an infinite column of fire. Unable to find the top or bottom of this column, both gods surrendered. That cosmic fire eventually cooled and became Arunachala.
The great sage Ramana Maharshi, who spent his entire adult life at the foot of Arunachala, stated: "Arunachala is truly the holy place. Of all holy places it is the most sacred." He further explained that while other sacred sites derive their power from the deities installed within temples, Arunachala IS the deity itself — the entire hill radiates spiritual energy.
Girivalam (also called Giri Pradakshina) means circumambulating this sacred hill on foot. The practice is described in the Arunachala Mahatmyam and the Skanda Purana as one of the most meritorious acts a devotee can perform.
Girivalam is especially powerful on Purnima (full moon) nights, when an estimated 1-3 million devotees walk the 14-kilometre path. Here are the 2026 Purnima dates:
| Month | Purnima Date | Special Significance |

The Karthigai Deepam festival in November 2026 is the most important event at Tiruvannamalai. A massive flame is lit atop Arunachala hill, symbolizing Shiva's fiery manifestation. The Girivalam on this night is considered equivalent to circling all the sacred sites in India. Plan well in advance as the town becomes extremely crowded.
The circumambulation path is approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) and follows a well-defined road around the hill. The route includes eight Lingam shrines (Ashta Lingams) representing the eight directions and elements:
1. Indra Lingam (East) — Represents the element of Heaven. Near the starting point.
2. Agni Lingam (Southeast) — Represents Fire. Powerful for removing negativity.
3. Yama Lingam (South) — Represents the Lord of Death. Pray here for longevity. Connect this with the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra practice.
4. Niruthi Lingam (Southwest) — Represents the protector from evil.
5. Varuna Lingam (West) — Represents Water. Offer prayers for emotional healing.
6. Vayu Lingam (Northwest) — Represents Wind. Pray for freedom from bondage.
7. Kubera Lingam (North) — Represents Wealth. Pray here for financial prosperity.
8. Ishanya Lingam (Northeast) — Represents Lord Shiva himself. The most sacred of the eight.
Route tip: Start from the Arunachaleswara Temple main entrance and walk clockwise (keeping the hill to your right). This is the traditional and correct direction.
The most powerful mantra during Girivalam is the Panchakshari:
ॐ नमः शिवाय
*Om Namah Shivaya*
For deeper practice, recite the Arunachala Stuti composed by Ramana Maharshi:
करुणापूर्णसुधाब्धे कबलितघनविश्वरूप किरणावलि-
अरुणाचल परमात्मने अरुणाचल शिव
